CARIMAC receives research funding from local agencies
CARIMAC has recently been awarded two grants, valuing J$6 million, to conduct research on professional capacity building in the media industry of Jamaica and the output of Jamaica’s electronic media sector content. The grants are awarded by UNESCO-Kingston and the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica (BCJ) and will be used within the first half of this academic year.
Commonwealth of Learning partners meeting
Patrick Prendergast, lecturer and coordinator of CARIMAC at the UWI Mona – Western Jamaica Campus, and adjunct lecturer in alternative media at Mona, Rosamond Brown represented the Institute at the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Partners Meeting held in Cape Town South Africa from September 12 – 17, 2011.
Teaching video produced for Dept of Community Health and Psychiatry
CARIMAC has recently produced three clinical training videos which will be used in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry’s teaching programme this semester.
Work begins on regional survey
CARIMAC has landed the contract to conduct a regional recall study for the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS’ Live Up campaign. The study is comprised of paper-based and online surveys and focus groups.
CARIMAC WJC students’ expo a big hit
Over 300 patrons, including high and tertiary students from schools in Western Jamaica, attended the communication exposition staged at the University of the West Indies, Mona - Western Jamaica Campus in Montego Bay on Thursday, November 25.
Highlights from Global Media Monitoring Project
CARIMAC recently partnered with the Women’s Media Watch and the Press Institute of Jamaica to launch the Global Media Monitoring Project which surveys Caribbean and Jamaican news media.
Prendergast presents work on community radio
Patrick Prendergast, coordinator of CARIMAC programmes at the UWI Western Jamaica Campus, presented a paper on Community Radio as Educational Platform - Challenges for Learner Support Groups. The paper is based on the work he has been doing with Radio Ak'Kutan in Blue Creek, Belize and JET Fm in Jeffrey Town, St Mary, Jamaica primarily through the CARIMAC-Commonwealth of Learning partnership.

Caribbean journalists’ coverage of science, education and culture hardly goes past the superficial. But the recently held CARIMAC UNESCO workshop gave journalists a chance to discuss with experts the developments and issues in regional science, technology, education and culture. John Maxwell, Journalist and CARIMAC lecturer, dies at 76
John Maxwell, one of CARIMAC’s long-serving adjunct lecturers, died on December 10, 2010, after a long illness. His memorial is planned for Monday, December 20, 10 a.m. at the University Chapel.

CARIMAC students were among a group of student-journalists from Jamaican universities who were urged to consider opportunities in content creation for media houses. The students were participants at a U.S. Embassy workshop on the role of the modern journalist.
CARIMAC/UNESCO offer scholarships to regional journos
CARIMAC, through a partnership with UNESCO’s Kingston Office, will offer some 15 Caribbean journalists full scholarships to attend a workshop on reporting education, science and culture. The workshop, which will run from December 6 to 8 in Jamaica, is designed to sensitise journalists to under-reported aspects of education, science and culture.
Researcher dedicates book to Jamaica’s Youth
A book, Music, Media & Adolescent Sexuality in Jamaica, written by Marcia Forbes, has been dedicated to Jamaica’s youth. Forbes, who is currently a PhD candidate at CARIMAC, says she hopes the young people in Jamaica will benefit from reading the new book, and in so doing will watch music videos and television in general with more critical and discerning eyes.
CSDI Caribbean programme in full swing
Activities under the Communication for Sustainable Development Initiative (CSDI) Caribbean programme are now in full swing and will become even more intensive over the next few months. Maria Protz, CSDI Caribbean coordinator, said so far requests for technical assistance have come from the Panos-Caribbean office as well as from the Jamaican Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries. Further activities are expected to begin in May 2011 for St. Lucia and Dominica.
