Lecturer gives opening talk at journo workshop

"Respect" shown in honour of Rex
"Respect", a film that details the 1999 installation of Professor the Honourable Ralston 'Rex' Nettleford as Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, was shown at CARIMAC as a mark of respect and remembrance. Professor Nettleford was instrumental in the establishment of CARIMAC, and up to the time of his death taught History, Politics and Culture of the West Indies in the Diploma Programme.
CARIMAC part of regional disaster management project
Before the calamitous earthquake in Haiti on January 12, a group of communications specialists, representatives from regional disaster offices and educators met to review draft materials aimed at increasing public awareness and education about tsunamis and other coastal hazards. Charmaine Henry, assistant lecturer and CARIMAC representative on the Public Awareness and Education sub-committee of the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System Project said the group's efforts are integral to regional disaster management. "We have to ensure that the communication strategy is effective and that the message designed is clear, appropriate and consistent for the region," Henry said.
Foundation created for Prof Nettleford
The University of the West Indies plans to establish the Rex Nettleford Foundation for Caribbean Cultural and Social Studies to commemorate the life and work of the former Vice-Chancellor Emeritus. This foundation will fund research in the arts, history, politics and culture of the Caribbean.
Final-year luncheon for CARIMAC students
CARIMAC hosted its second annual business luncheon for final-year students on February 4. Almost ninety students from the undergraduate and diploma programmes attended. This year's guest speaker was Yvonne Gittens Joseph, High Commissioner for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago who spoke about the opportunities within the CSME for young people and media practitioners.
CARIMAC alumnus and lecturer collab on historic publication
Champs 100 is the latest project of Michael Grant, CARIMAC adjunct lecturer. Grant, who edits the book, has partnered with CARIMAC alumnus Hubert Lawrence to produce a commemorative work that celebrates the ISSA/Grace Boys and Girls Athletics Championships in Jamaica.
Grad has eyes set on the film industry
Michelle Serieux (Multimedia, ’05) has her eyes set on the international film festival Berlinale. There, Serieux hopes to show her short film ‘Missed’.
New book edited by former CARIMAC head
Former CARIMAC director Marjan de Bruin is one of three editors of a new book on gender and advertising. The book is entitled Women, Advertising and Representation and is published by Hampton Press in New Jersey. The other members of the editorial team are Sue Abel and Anita Nowak.

The University of the West Indies has conferred an honorary doctorate on John Maxwell, veteran journalist, environmental activist and adjunct lecturer. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa.

St. Juste wraps up film shoot
Adjunct lecturer Franklyn St. Juste recently completed photography on the documentary film "Coolie Pink and Green". The film is about the coming of age of a young girl and a culture. It is directed and produced by Dr. Patricia Mohammed, professor of gender and culture studies at the UWI.
Students shadow Fame FM staff during on campus broadcast
Natalee Legore, Primrose Barrett, Simone Lunan and Ruth Levy received first-hand experience when they co-presented and co-produced the “School Rules” programme on Fame Fm. Legore and Barrett co-presented the programme while the other pair shadowed the programme’s producer.
Lecturers to take part in Global Media Monitoring Project
In early November, the fourth Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) will take place in over 110 countries around the world. Hilary Nicholson of Women’s Media Watch-Jamaica, and an adjunct lecturer, is spearheading Jamaica’s participation in the survey. Additionally, Nicholson and lecturer Corinne Barnes are coordinating the participation of nine other Caribbean territories in this global research project.
