The University of the West Indies has conferred an honorary doctorate on John Maxwell, veteran journalist, environmental activist and adjunct lecturer. He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa.

Maxwell has worked in media since the 1950s, starting his career as a shipping reporter at the Gleaner. He has practiced his craft locally and overseas, becoming the first non-white editor in the BBC newsroom. He has influenced the practice of many journalists with his deep knowledge of media ethics and law.

"Maxwell has brought to all his writing, an unprecedented accumulation of knowledge, a profound concern for accuracy and a deep compassion for people and the environment that even his detractors are forced to recognise," said Professor Brian Meeks during the citation presented to Maxwell.
