CARIMAC part of regional disaster management project
Before the calamitous earthquake in Haiti on January 12, a group of communications specialists, representatives from regional disaster offices and educators met to review draft materials aimed at increasing public awareness and education about tsunamis and other coastal hazards. Charmaine Henry, assistant lecturer and CARIMAC representative on the Public Awareness and Education sub-committee of the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System Project said the group's efforts are integral to regional disaster management. "We have to ensure that the communication strategy is effective and that the message designed is clear, appropriate and consistent for the region," Henry said.
Henry also said that while regional disaster management agencies realise the significance of their service, they still require greater understanding of how to successfully formulate communication strategy, design communication tools and effectively use media.
