CARIMAC/UNESCO offer scholarships to regional journos

Canute James, CARIMAC director

CARIMAC, through a partnership with UNESCO’s Kingston Office, will offer some 15 Caribbean journalists full scholarships to attend a workshop on reporting education, science and culture. The workshop, which will run from December 6 to 8 in Jamaica, is designed to sensitise journalists to under-reported aspects of education, science and culture.

Assessments by Caribbean editors suggest that education, science and culture are areas that are not well reported by regional journalists. Canute James, director of CARIMAC, believes that “this deficiency is to the detriment of the people of the region, and to (our) social and economic improvement.”

“The intention is not to teach journalism, but to assist journalists in applying their skills to the coverage of education, science and culture,” he explained.

Dr. James said that stories that are more meaningful to Caribbean people could be generated in these areas if journalists widened their scope of inquiry. This could mean exploring the impact of financial policy on education, looking at other definitions of culture and examining the role of science in national and regional development.
