CARIMAC WJC students’ expo a big hit

Over 300 patrons, including high and tertiary students from schools in Western Jamaica, attended the communication exposition staged at the University of the West Indies, Mona - Western Jamaica Campus in Montego Bay on Thursday, November 25.
Dr. Orville Taylor, senior lecturer at the University of the West Indies, Mona, and popular talk show host, delivered the main address and applauded the final year public relations students for crafting and executing an expo of such value. In making reference to the Expo’s theme: Create, Innovate, Elevate, Dr Taylor stressed that it is truth and knowledge that allows individuals to create, innovate and elevate in any area of life.
“Seek the truth, seek knowledge because the truth must be platform upon which everything is done,” he added.
Representatives from various areas in the communication field mounted exhibitions and interacted with scores of students who were eager to capitalize on the opportunity to talk first hand with communication experts.
Communication practitioners present included broadcaster Dervan Malcolm, publishing guru Ian Randle, broadcaster Halshane Burke, Sandals Regional Public Relations Manager, Khadine Daley, Graphic Artist, Sharry Ann Watson, broadcaster and Public Relations Specialist, Marlene Stephenson-Dalley, Communication Officer at the Constabulary Communication Network, Steve Brown, Public Relations Manager at JPS Co., Kathy Cooke, University Lecturers Philip Clarke and Tony Thompson, Communications Trainer, Natasha Parchment Clarke and President of The Western Knights
Project Manager, Delano Williams, said the day was successful and demonstrated to participants the myriad opportunities in the communication industry.
“The expo is a tremendous success, not only because we saw over 300 participants, but because participants were eager to learn, and a number of them expressed desire in pursuing their studies in Communications,” said Mr. Williams.
Communication Works Expo 2010 is the brainchild of 19 students from the Public Relations class who will be among the first to receive undergraduate degrees at the UWI - Western Jamaica Campus in November 2011.
The Expo was made possible with the kind sponsorship of The University of the West Indies, The Gleaner Company, RJR Communications Group, Linkz 96 FM, The Montego Cooperative Credit Union, The Urban Development Cooperation, Rainforest Seafoods, Fontana Pharmacy, J&J Pharmacy, Digicel, Sunset Beach Resort and The Office of Student Services and Development at the UWI, Western Jamaica Campus.
